AUGUST: 5 Peso Stumpy in Grand Prix Guangzhou, China (side event)

I promised my 5 peso stumpy deck that whenever I go abroad I'll take her with me. So when I went to Guangzhou, China for the Grand Prix, I fulfilled again that promise. She get the chance to dance in China's ballroom floor when I registered her for the legacy side event. Even though the said event had only four rounds, it has a lot of unforgettable things.

RD 1 MUD Eldrazi

Game one ended when he called a Chalice of the Void setting it at one. However, things were different in game two because I had him at turn two. Two Invigorates and two Berserks to my attacking Jungle Lion on my turn two forced a do-or-die game. Unfortunately I got stuck on one land in our game three, sans I lose.

RD 2 Sneak Attack

For game one, his Emrakul 15/15 ate me and my pets alive. In game two, Griselbrand swang at full speed but Fog greeted him not just once, but twice. I won game two with a collected effort from Kavu Predator, Nettle Sentinel, Rancor and Skarrgan Pit-Skulk. But game three did not end in our favor. Griselbrand and Emrakul team-up to hand us our second loss of the day. Show and Tell into Sneak Attack into Griselbrand and Emrakul, GG.

RD 3 Eldrazi and Taxes

Second turn Stoneforge Mystics Calling out an Umezawa's Jitte, GG. Jungle Lion immediately avenge our loss by finishing him off on turn two,  two Invigorates and two Berserks. Game three took us like 30 minutes to settle things down. A top decked Eldrazi Displacer was all he needed to send my creatures to oblivion thus nullifying their inherent abilities to block.

YAHOO! A win for my beloved deck in a foreign soil! I know its a bye, but I'd still count it as a win.  ^_^

AUGUST: Pyromancer Ascension

After a frustrating July with the Unstorm version, I summoned my ritual base deck to help me get back on the winning track. August 6th was a perfect date for raking planeswalker points due to high number of modern PPTQ and GPT contests around the metro. Sadly, I sit out on all events because I went pokemon hunting with my son. The following day, in as much that I would like to play in a PPTQ than a GPT because of its multiplier, I went to Friday Quest's GPT,  with this list, because it was the nearest playground that offers a multiplier to where I was. FQ registered 21 players, five rounds of elimination swiss and a cut to top 8 to help determine who will have the bye allotted. My matches were as follows.

I ponder on three things from this experience. First, game one versus Ad Nauseam. He used his Pact of Negation in vitiating my game breaking ritual. During his upkeep, after resolving his flower artifact from its suspension, cracked it and tapped his two mana cast Ad Nauseam with Phyrexian Unlife on his side. Realizing that I do not have counters to halt his engine, he grabbed his entire deck and showed it to me. I checked its content and respectfully gave it back then began picking up my cards. As soon as I was skimming on my fifteen, I suddenly recall his Pact of Negation trigger. I should have won that one but instead of crying over spilt milk, I simply shrug it off and focused on our incoming game two. Second, Echoing Truth is an answer against an unknown deck especially if the game ended in just three or four turns without you seeing much from his side. This happened to me against my third round opponent, an Abzan aggro. I won game one on turn three. I did not see that much so I included my singleton Echoing Truth together with my three pieces of Empty the Warrens without me knowing that it will save my ass from the jaws of defeat by bouncing Worship before swinging for lethal. Third, an opening hand with only a land (regardless if it is a basic, dual or fetch land) is a big no especially if you're in the finals. With me behind the wheels of an Ascension deck, especially if it has two or three cantrips with it, I am not that pessimistic. Unfortunately against the Titan shift, I kept a hand of a Sulfur Falls, rituals, Manamorphose and a Blood Moon. Three or four turns after, I lose.

August 13th saw three modern GPTs around the metro, Got Game (Makati Square), Dragonforge (Katipunan) and PC Butlers (Sta Rosa). I went to Got Game's GPT because it's the nearest to where I was. Because of the bad weather, Got Game only had 26 players, 5 rounds of elimination swiss and a cut to top 8 to help determine who will have the bye for Grand Prix Kuala Lumpur. My matches were as follows.

And since I do not after the byes for GP Kuala Lumpur, not to mention the worsening weather, I simply conceded to my quarter finals opponent (Dredge) so that I can go home early. There were only two good things that I would like to share from this grind. First against Naya Burn. It was his third turn, I think. He's tapped out but had an active Eidolon of the Great Revel plus a bunch of cards at hand; and to make more unfavorable I was down to twelve life points. I dropped my third land, cast Goblin Electromancer (10), cast a ritual (8) (3R), then Manamorphose (6) (2R 2B), followed by Serum Visions (4) (2R 1B) that handed the Grapeshot I needed in killing his enchantment creature (2) (1R 1B). I win from there (through another ritual, Past in Flames into recycling my graveyard). Second, against Ad Nauseam. His Spoils from the Vault failed him because the named card  showed only after 22 flips. Mentally looking back I think I do not have any misplays in this grind.

August 20th, Coswort hobby shop (Dasmariñas, Cavite) hosted Pinoy Planeswalker's Fifth Modern Series. There were 18 players, 5 rounds of swiss with play-offs. By the way I am still on the same seventy-five. My matches were as follows.

Reminders
I've said this before, and I will say it here again. Against the Merfolk deck, always fetch for Steam Vents because you do not want to go double island (thanks to their Speading Seas turning your lone source of red mana) a turn after your second land. Also, there's a probability that his school of fish can out run (lord effects plus islandwalk) your horde of goblins. If you're planning to take the goblin route still, make sure you'll win in one swing. Again, please be mindful of their Cursecatchers for it can ruin your math. Gifts Ungiven instructs us to look for up to FOUR cards with DIFFERENT names on it. This could also mean four different lands. I could have won my third round if I only saw that side of the coin.

All in all I ended up with a 12-3-5 win-loss-draw mark. I hope I'll have good results in the upcoming war that I'll be participating with. Anyway, before parting our ways, my calendar for modern.

AUGUST: The Epic Storm (TES)

I had five chances of testing my TES deck but only managed to play one. It was a legacy FNM at Neutral Grounds Glorietta (Makati). We only had it 4 rounds. My match ups were as follows.

Burn 2-1

Belcher 2-0

Burn 2-1

Lands 2-0

My losses were due to their Eidolon of the Great Rebel. I had two good memory that I can recall from this FNM. First was gainst the belcher. It was game two he summoned 14 or 16 1/1 goblin in his turn one. I Ponder shuffle and just pass in my opening turn. His troupe almost depleted my life total. When I got my turn back, before the draw phase, my relevant hand was a Lotus Petal, an Underground Sea, a Dark Ritual, 2 Rite of Flames and Lion's Eye Diamond before top decking an Infernal Tutor for the turn. Second was against the land deck. Game two I summoned a mob of goblins. I prayed like a saint that no Glacial Chasm or The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale or Crop Rotation will come to his aid. My prayer was heard by the storm god Keranos. Thank you for granting!

JULY: PPTQ Dublin

I sat out all but one of last year's modern PPTQ tournaments due to a personal reason. For this year's PPTQ modern contests, I hope that I will be able to book my name in one of the seats they'll be giving away. My campaign begins at Neutral Grounds Alabang Town Center (July 23rd). For a registration fee of Php 300, we got 67 players, 7 rounds of swiss plus cut to top 8 play offs. I bet everyone of those 67 players went home very happy. I dropped from the said event after the sixth round. My matches by the way were as follows.

The loses
One land keep. Out of 15 games, probably I had it like 5 to 7 games. And out of those numbers, I lost like 3 or 4 times. It really takes guts in deciding if you are going to keep such. Sometimes it gives you very good draws, well if that's the case then good job and congrats for your gamble pays-off. But most of the time, you will just end up losing the game because you lack the correct number of mana for your spells. Unfortunately, during this PPTQ at NG ATC, I experienced the latter.

Another reason why I lost games was falling short of mana. Recalling one of those games, I was just needing  a Manamorphose to ignite the loop. But unfortunately, when it reached my hand, I only had like one floating available. My remedy to this problems, go off at the last possible window of opportunity.

And lastly, the paying of two life points from either Noxious Revival or Gitaxian Probe. There are two answers to this problem (I think): (i) use them patiently and wisely; (ii) include Lightning Helix. With the addition of the boros spell, it not just ease the scoring load from Lightning Bolt, it also gives you enough life cushion. Meaning it gives you an extra time needed in order for you to do or set up the loop. And speaking of Lightning Helix in an Ascension deck, congratulations to Harane Kenta and Akira Asahara for landing second and fourth respectively in their modern WMCQ.

Friday  Quest's PPTQ was scheduled on the following day but I failed to be there on time. I still went there and took a selfie while everyone was wearing their poker faces. That's level two Judge Nick Yu giving us a thumbs up by the way.

JULY: Pyromancer Ascension

Modern season was officially upon us right after the first World Magic Cup Qualifier (WMCQ) had its winner. The two weekends following it, aside from the regular modern PR-pass tournaments in every shop, we saw multiple modern GPTs. To name a few: Dragonforge (Katipunan), Raxx (Marikina), Hobby Pro Central (BF Homes), NG ATC (Alabang), Modern Series Open at MDP and Wabshaq (Madcap Gaming), Regran Open Modern (Quezon City), PC Butlers (Sta Rosa) and Got Game (Makati Square).

July 3, less than a week before the scheduled second WMCQ, I brought my beloved Pyromancer Ascension deck at Got Game's modern GPT. I had the same sixty but differs a little with the fifteen. The said event had 60 plus players, six rounds and a cut to top eight playoffs. Here were my matches.

The event reminded me of three things. First, timing is very important against an Ad Nauseam deck. This archetype can win at instant speed even if you have an online Pyromancer Ascension on your table. All he will have to do is respond to one of your spell, either at your first spell or the spell before whatever your win condition, draw his entire library, use his Pact of Negations either in negating your spell or to protect his, and win from there via Lightning Storm. And if in case he does not have the combo pieces yet, he can still halt your offensive onslaught by firing an Angel's Grace or Silence.

Second, URW Nahiri Control deck, excluding Snapcaster Mage's flashback giving ability, has an average number of six to seven counter spells in its main; and two to three more plus other form of hate for your permanents in its sideboard. So if you find yourself paired against this deck, patience is going to be your best friend. Seize the moment when he taps out or when there are only a few lands available for him to use.

And third, keeping a one lander in a game three, is ... uhmmmm ... not a good idea.

Three days after, there were a lot of modern tournaments around the metro because July 6th was declared a non working holiday. After finishing all my obligations for the day, I went to the nearest to my home, Aaron Manalo's group at BGC High Street. I brought the same seventy-five. We started like six in the evening and had it four rounds. My matches were as follows.

4c Gifts Control 2-0    

Visions of Beyond was superb against Mono Black Control because it draws me heap of cards that I used in sustaining my momentum. Also, Noxious Revival did a great job keeping Gifts Esper's Unburial - Iona, Shield of Emeria route at bay. If you happen to be around BGC High Street on a Wednesday night, and is itching to play modern, you can find them at the second floor of Bo's Coffee BGC HS.

July 9, the day everyone was excited for. There were a total of 450 plus registered players; which means ten rounds plus day two top 8 playoffs. Unfortunately I had a miserable start dropping three of my first four games. I left the event two rounds before its scheduled completion with a 4-4 win-loss mark. My match ups were as follows:

end of turn, BOLT you

It's game three and you are down to six, after all the stuff that you did in your turn, you now ship the turn back to your opponent. "end of turn, Lightning Bolt you," he said before untapping for his would be last turn. This is a scenario that will surely makes you pray like the saint. 

Investing in  a competitive mono red burn deck is one of the best thing to you'll do because it can win you the whole tournament not just in modern but also in legacy. Here's five reason why I think it is.

- It is easy to pilot. All you have to do is direct all burn spells to your opponent. Do not mind the moniker 'no-brainer deck', as long as you're winning with it, that's all what matters.

- Mono Red legacy and modern burn decks shares like 70% to 85% of the main deck card choices, most of the time. Splashing another color will make your winning rate higher, but if you're not willing to shell out then mono red will do.

- In both formats, Eidolon of the Great Rebel will have an average trigger damage of two to six to your opponent because these formats love to sling spells that have a converted casting cost of three and below.

- Regardless whether you're on a legacy or modern mono red burn deck, a second turn ten damages to your opponent is just a normal thing for this bad boy.

- And lastly, most of the important burn spells are reprinted in the following: Magic Origins, Duel Decks Anthology, Jace vs Chandra, Premium Deck: Fire and Lightning, Modern Masters 2015, Khans of Tarkir and Eternal Masters 2016.
