APRIL 2020: UR STORM

Hello there fellow quarantine citizens of planet earth!  I hope you are all fine!

As promised, here are the results of my Untap-in modern magic gaming.

Notes:

I thought I will have a perfect 5-0 before going to lunch until I lost to my fifth opponent, 8-Whack. Game three, in his first turn: 2 Memnites, 1 Ornithopter, 1 Signal Pest, 1 Mountain, 2 SSG and  1 Reckless Bushwacker. So Crazy! I was not able to assemble my combo in the next two turns.

URW Control

Game one was easy because most of his hates are intended for creatures. Game two, instead of having 8 goblin tokens, I ended up calling 12 goblins thanks to his two counter spells. WIN.

Boros Burn

Game three, my second turn: 12 tokens. His second turn: Eidolon. I won the race. 

TRON

Game two, he mulled for Leyline of the Void. I had a turn two Blood Moon out. He never recovered from it. Win!

UW Control

Game one, Teferi on the stack, an online Pyromancer Ascension +  a lot of instant spells, then Quicken + PIF + Quicken again + Grapeshot equals win. I have to do this in order to negate his Force of Negation's alternate casting cost. His mana was not enough to cast whatever counter spell he had in his hand. Game two, I was able to out race him with a turn two 12 tokens.

Notes:

GW Hardened was able to assemble his combo: Heliod + Hardened + Spike = 10 millions lives and a 10 million / 10 million Spike Feeder. I defeated him by milling his whole deck out, three online Pyromancer Ascension + Though Scours + Increasing Vengeance. I lost game three though in the same combo set up. 

Allies are so fast! I cannot out race it. 

UR Delver, used Grapeshot as a board wipe first before aiming for the win in the next turn.

APRIL 2020: UR STORM

Greetings! 

I hope you are doing well in this time of quarantine. 

Being at home does not stop other planeswalkers from playing the game. Others did it by playing (with themselves or with a partner whether it be your child or significant other) two decks or simply gold fishing/ shadow boxing. Others through video chat (with friends), MTGO, and/or MTGA. And others, like me, through Untap in.

I played five rounds of modern before going to bed. I used my beloved UR Storm and here are the five decks that I faced.

It seems that team Ad Nauseam is using a new win condition route, via inverter. Unfortunately for the opponent, he was drawing lands. 

PROWESS

Game three was fast. I was down to 11 (or 10) by turn two. I was a turn short from assembling my combo. 

PONSA

Game three, I draw bricks. And his Bloodbraid Elves were calling creature cards with haste to speed-up my demise. Maybe I am wrong to call his deck PONSA and I think I should call it RG ramp instead.

DEATH SHADOW

Game three, mob of eight goblins was enough to get me the win. 

UG COMBO

I have no idea how this deck run, but from what I can recall, his deck was so slow in assembling his combo (or lock) pieces. 

UR STORM
Here are some of the highlights of my deck.

End of turn of my opponent's turn: Quicken into Past in Flames into Quicken (same card) into Grapeshot for the win. 

Some opponents had multiple hates for my graveyard, so my mob of goblin tokens took over.

Win through: Electrodominance plus an online Pyromancer Ascension.

2 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws was my record.

I could have converted the draws into win; but juggling two completely different things at the same time at the same place - is hard. Attending / guarding your kid in an event like this and trying to have a consistent firm grip of control on your opponent's board state are hard to accomplish. 

Here are my errors / misplays. First, I kept bad opening hands (5 lands, 1 path, and 1 Absorb) and (Island, helix, Relic, FON, shackles, and ancient) during game one against an unknown opponents. The second one was: I should have double checked each card my opponent has on his side of the table before committing counters onto an Engineered Explosives. Next was when I had like ten untapped non-fetchlands lands on my table but still opted to pay mana for a counter spell (Dovin's Veto) instead of just simply paying two mana to negate the effect of his Spell Pierce. Fourth was when I decided to cut Sphinx Final Word from the main for the fourth Cryptic Command at the last minute before the event started. And lastly, I should have dropped the second Vedalken Shackles instead of just making it sit on my cards-at-hand the whole time. 

On the positive note, here are the good things I experienced from this event. First, Academy Ruins bailed me out against the UB mill opponent. The second was when Kor Firewalker single-handedly won me the round against the Mono Red Prowess. Third was when Vedalken Shackles successfully 'borrowed' Gideon. Destroying multiple permanents, with the same casting cost, via Engineered Explosives is the fourth best thing. Fifth was when I get to stifle opponent's whatever ability he has for me.  And lastly, the Jollibee-date before and after the event with Chabeng.

x-2-1 was my record.

I committed four misplays during the February 23rd event. The first was in the round one where I should have waited for the right moment before dropping Vedalken Shackles. The second misplay was forgetting to tic down the Ancestral Vision's counter. 

As for the third: RTFC before doing something. This happened maybe like two or three times throughout the day, but the most irritating RTFC situation happened in my win-in game.  I dropped Vedalken Shackles and immediately activated it to 'borrow' opponent's druid. Opponent simply tapped Giver of Runes to give it PROTECTION FROM COLORLESS.

And lastly, I thought I had a Lightning Helix in my graveyard. So when I casted a Snapcaster Mage, and I found out that there was none . So I opt for Archmage's Charm instead. 

There were, well not really misplays, but should I say unfortunate circumstances because I lost games because of these. These were: (i) I got stuck with three lands; (ii) The lands I had on the table were: 2 Islands, Mountain, and an Academy Ruins on the board while my hand hand the following: Lightning Helix, Absorb, Magmatic Sinkhole, and a Cryptic Command; and (iii) he had a 4/5 Kalitas out and I had a Vedalken Shackles but my Island count was  short by one.

Notes:

I just borrowed Allan's Mono Black deck and tweaked it into my liking. As for the main deck, I lessen its creature count for the following: (i) increased the creature/ planeswalker removals; (ii) added a couple of Underworld Connections and (iii)  Underwold Dreams.  And for the sideboard, I just took out both of his Leyline of Sanctity in his original 15 and replaced it with Sorcerous Spyglass.
