DECEMBER 2017: Mono Blue Merfolk

Now that RPTQ Manila is in the books, I can finally shelve my beloved UR Storm deck. This gives me the opportunity to play my new deck, Merfolk. Despite the popularity of the blue-green sibling, I still opted with the traditional mono blue build.

25 November 2017
Century Mall Makati
hosted by MTG Vault

I felt the same when I switched from storm to zoo. However, unlike zoo, I only have a handful of online reading merfolk materials. So I just relied on my experience when I put up my first merfolk seventy-five. The main deck has the following: 15 Island, 4 Mutavault, 1 Oboro, Palace in the Clouds, 4 Cursecatcher, 4 Lord of Atlantis, 4 Master of the Pearl Trident, 4 Merrow Reejerey, 4 Silvergill Adept, 4 Master of Waves, 4 Harbinger of the Tides, 2 Kira, Great Glass-Spinner, 2 Phantasmal Image, 4 Aether Vial, and 4 Spreading Seas. And the sideboard: 3 Ceremonious Rejection, 4 Relic of Progenitus, 3 Disdainful Stroke, 2 Negate, 2 Hurkyl's Recall, and 1 Grafdigger's Cage.

The memorable modern tournament that took place at Century Mall on the 25th of November had six rounds and cut to top eight. I faced the following:

Jund DS 1-2
UW Gideon Control 0-2
Ad Naus 2-1
Merfolk 1-2
Eldrazi Tron 2-0
Scry Red 2-0
(3-3)  (8-7)

My errors
JUND Death's Shadow
It was in game three and both players were at four life points. He attacked with three creatures: two 8/8 Death's Shadow and a 0/1 Tarmogoyf. I have in hand a Harbinger of the Tides and on the table one of each: Merrow Reejerey, Mutavault, Silvergill Adept, plus five other untapped islands. I activated Mutavault declaring it as my sole blocker to the first Death's Shadow. Then called out Harbinger to bounce the second 8/8 black tapped creature. Before damage dealing, he casted Temur Battle Rage to pump the hell out his Death's Shadow. I should have waited patiently before making any move. I also forgot reejerey's ability. Oh well, I'll just charge this to experience.

UW Gideon Control
Game one, my starting seven was: 2 Islands, 2 Spreading Seas and lord effects. I carefully evaluate my hand for the best possible route. I decided to call out the Spreading Seas as my early moves in a hope of denying him of white sources. My noble intention was put into waste because of his Supreme Verdict buried my school in one turn. The same thing happened in game two. I never get to call another school after those incidents.

Other notes:
- Reejerey has TAP (potential blocker) (combo with Harbinger) or UNTAP (my land) triggered ability.
- There were games that I could have won the game - only if had a Vapor Snag at hand.
- Do not forget Aether Vial’s upkeep trigger. Also, there are combat situations where vial plays a vital role in helping you swing the tides into your favor.
 - Auto-out Lord of Atlantis in a mirror match.

8 December 2017
MTG Vault
Olympia, Makati City

The changes I made are as follows:
-(main) less 1 Island for Minamo, School at Water's Edge
-(main) less a Master of Waves for an Echoing Truth
-(sb) less two Negates and 1 Grafddiger's Cage for 3 Unsubstantiate

Goblin Bushwhack  2-0
Living End 0-2
Tron 2-1
Rakdos Aggro 2-1
(3-1)   (6-4)

Charge these to experience
-That Living End deck is (I think) a bad match up.
-RTFC.
-Do not forget (again) to tick Aether Vial during upkeep.
-He had blockers, I was not attacking. I forgot that I Spreading Seas-ed him earlier in that game. Yeah, fuck that very good of me.
-Check as well the proper sequence of spells and/ or triggers. Also include the colors being spent for every spell of ability.
-Vapor Snag < Unsubstantiate
-Need to learn more on when to properly use a Merfolk card.
-My combat skills are slowly (but surely) improving.

10 December 2017
The Block 101's Series Finale

The event has a master list of all the invited players. I tuned my seventy-five towards the expected meta. I added two Dismembers in the main replacing the Echoing Truth and the Kira, Great Glass-Spinner. I removed 1 Disdainful Stroke, 1 Relic of Progenitus, and 1 Unsubstantiate to make room for 2 Negate and 1 Sea’s Claim in the sideboard.

Scapeshift Bring to Light 0-2
Ad Naus 1-2
Tron 2-1
Ponza 2-1
Ad naus 2-0
(3-2)   (7-6)

- For the nth time, I forgot to tick that Aether Vial.
- Kept some bad hands.
- Unsubstantiate is great!
- I miss having an Echoing Truth in the seventy-five.
- All of a sudden Cryptic Command comes across my mind, will it be a good idea to bring it into the mix?
- Dismember becomes a dead card when you reached four and below life points.
- Always maximize your resources (value wise).

After spending three tournaments on mono blue merfolk, I registered nine wins out of sixteen rounds (21-17). Numbers are not that impressive. Even though the breaks are not going my way (yet), I will continue using this mono blue merfolk for my next modern outings.

Days after the Block 101's Finale, while browsing the world wide web, I rediscovered these cards again that I think could be a good reinforcements.

One of the best defensive card ever printed. A 3/1, flying, flash, and can totally disrupt the tempo of your opponent. I will definitely include this in my next tournaments.

Some of its positive traits are: (i) it feeds Master of Waves' devotion ability; (ii) it flies with a 3/3 body, well, that is after paying 2; (iii) becomes another lord but only after paying 4.

In case those red and/ or green creatures will be that rampant, I think this is going to be a very good addition to the sideboard.

The only thing I do not like about this is its condition.

One to cast counter spells
I almost forgot about these guys (Dispel, Spell Snare, Spell Pierce, and Swan Song). I think I'll bring two to three of them, in any combination, into my 75.

A lot of people are saying that it is the merfolk's equivalent of Kira, Great Glass-Spinner. Well, at one point, maybe. But overall Kira, Great Glass-Spinner is probably a little better than Kopala because of the following: (i) yes both cards slow your opponent in depleting your school (spot removals) but this is where Kira shines better, it mandates your opponent to use two spot removals for every creature he wishes to kill unlike that of kopala's in which all he have to do is to add two per spot removal. Another reason I think why kira better is because (ii) with it, your creatures are still protected to those comes into play triggered abilities. Kopala only protects your creatures from your opponent's activated abilities. To be fair, in the case of Abrupt Decay and the like uncounterable spot removal spellhe will still be required to pay two before he can kill your fish whereas in Kira's, it simply ignores the latter's ability.

17 December 2017
Magical Dream Portal's (MDP) christmas party (modern)
Friday Quest's (FQ) christmas party (modern)

I brought this 75 to those two events.

4 Spreading Seas
4 Aether Vial
3 Dismember

1 Kira, Great Glass-Spinner
1 Phantasmal Image
1 Kopala, Warden of Waves
3 Master of Waves
4 Silvergill Adept
4 Curesecatcher
4 Harbinger of the Tides
4 Merrow Reejerey
4 Lord of Atlantis
4 Master of the Pearl Trident

13 Island
4 Mutavault
1 Cavern of Souls
1 Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

Sideboard
1 Tidebinder Mage
1 Echoing Truth
1 Hurkyl's Recall
3 Relic of Progenitus
2 Unsubstantiate
3 Ceremonious Rejection
2 Negate
2 Unified Will

Yes, still on mono blue. I do not like the feeling of getting Blood Moon-ed that is why I am not shifting (yet) to its blue-green sibling. Here are my chronological match results from two christmas party event.

MDP
bye
Elves 0-2
Elves 1-2
RW goat 1-2

FQ
Boros Burn 2-0
UW Control 0-2
UW DnT 2-0
UW DnT 2-0
Grix DS 2-0

Learning is a never ending process, so here are some of my mistakes that I can still recall from the December 17 events.

Elves
One thing is I am sure, merfolk is no match for their speed. My first error was: at one point my board had the following: 3 Cursecathcers and 2 lord effects. He tapped all his mana, cast this and that elf before bringing on to the table a Collected Company. I assumed that he had 4 more floating. When I gave the green light to his, while he was looking at the top six cards for those duo, and mentally double check his mana. DAMN he just had one floating. Moral lesson: (*sing to the tune of rite med) Huwag Mahihiyang magtanong, kung ilan ang mana mo. My second error was forgetting that Collective Company is an instant.

UW Death and Taxes
Even though I had two Dismembers at hand early in the game, I did not immediately use them for his Wall of Omens. I simply waited for my buff giving lords to deal with his walls. Lord of Atlantis and Master of the Pearl Trident are the MVPs

UW Control
Though I think I had no error in this game, I just like to put into record that it was an uphill battle due to the deck's tons of spot and mass removals plus life gain shenanigans. Cavern of Souls was not a big factor in this game because I think he side out his counters.

I was suppose to play in one of the modern events that are scheduled today, 23rd of December. But due to unforeseen circumstances, I was unable to attend to it. There you have it, I think I already played my last tournament for the year 2017. If in case a hobby shop will have its modern year end this December 30th, I hope my schedule permits. Thank you very much for reading! MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

NOVEMBER 2017: Blue and Red Storm

19 November 2017
RPTQ at Regran

Thirty-two players, five rounds cut to top eight. Sadly, I only lasted until the third round. So putting those rounds into total games played, seven. I losing all but one. Those six losses had the same reason: I got flooded. Zee sus  cryst! That was my worst output piloting a UR Storm deck, EVER! My matches were: Eldrazi Tron, Grix DS, and RW Prison. Even though I did not made it to the top, I am still happy on how the deck performed all year long, 75 wins 41 losses and 6 draws. Definitely I'll give UR Storm a break after playing 122 rounds of modern magic. I hope things will be great for UR Storm for 2018. So far UR storm is scheduled to play on Grands Prix Kyoto (Team Trio) and Hong Kong's.

And before ending this, my calendar for the remaining days of 2017.

NOVEMBER 2017: UR STORM

Due to other non MTG related errands, it took me weeks before I get the chance to shuffle my seventy-five in a sanctioned event. Now that RPTQ is just around the corner, I need to put an end on my losing streak.

5 November 2017
The Block 101
Mandaluyong City

Just hours before the event's round one, I decided to implement the following modification: (i) removed these: 1 Gifts Ungiven, 1 fetchland, 1 Increasing Vengeance, 4 Goblin Electromancer, 1 Opt and 3 Faithless Looting. (ii) Then added the following cards: 4 Thought Scour, 3 Baral, Chief of Compliance, and 4 Lightning Bolts. (iii) As for the sideboard: 3 Leyline of Sanctity, 3 Blood Moon, 3 Empty the Warrens, 2 Shattering Spree, 2 Echoing Truth, 1 Defense Grid, and 1 Dismember.

Mono Red Chalice 2-0
Dredge 2-0
Mono White Humans 1-2
Fetchless UR Storm 2-0
E.Tron ID

Q: Naya Burn 2-0
S: BG Tron 0-2

Mono Red Chalice Deck
I keep this seven-hand: 2 lands, 1 Pyromancer Ascension, 1 ritual, and 3 Though Scours. He went first, Mountain + Simian Spirit Guide into Chalice of the Void for one. I did not see it coming. I managed to snatch game one because of an online ascension. I won game two with X goblin tokens.

Dredge
Prior to this, I lost my last four dredge assignments. Keeping those experiences in mind, picking up my fifth versus this archetype is not an option. He lost game one because of a one land seven-hand keep. Game two, I won on my fourth turn thanks to an online red enchantment.

Mono White Humans
I board wipe his battalion with Grapeshot then win the game on my next turn. Game two, after wiping out his army, including that first Thalia, Guardian of Thraben with it, he dropped his second Thalia. I did not get any removal. Game three and I keep this hand: 1 Serum Vision, and 6 lands 4 of which are fetch lands. YUP! I know, that was stupid of me. So boys and girls, please, do not listen to what your math brain cells tells you that "hey look 4 fetches in a 16 lander deck, it thins your deck thus statistically saying drawing combo pieces increases. NEVER. EVER. KEEP. THAT KIND OF HAND.

Fetchless UR Storm
Good thing I had those Lightning Bolts in the main deck. I denied his chances of combing-off by bolting his medallion bear each time he drops one. I won game one with an online Pyromancer Ascension. Game two, I kept this mulligan to four hand: Leyline of Sanctity, a ritual, and 2 cantrips. For the record, I did not mulligan for than white leyline. It was just that lands were nowhere to be found in each opening hand prior to keeping that four. Leyline of Sanctity was enough to keep him at bay. It took me like eight to ten turns to reach three lands which was all I needed to fuel my Baral led squad to victory.

E.Tron
ID. Did four games of playtests. Won two games all with 60. Lost the other two with sideboards.

Q: Naya Burn
Game one: I won game one with an online Pyromancer Ascension. No Red Eidolon at sight, lucky me!
Game two: Turn two 12 goblin tokens was too much for his burn spells to handle.

S: BG Tron
Game one: Unable to go off because his (three in a row) Karn Liberated ate all my blue-red resources.
Game two: I had a good seven-hand but drew bricks in my succeeding turns. Lose.
(4-2-1)   (9-4-1)

Lightning Bolt
-Bolt slows down creature base decks.
-Bolt keeps main deck storm nuisance creatures at bay (Thalia and DnT and friends, Red Eidolon, Meddling Mage, Scavenging Ooze, Spell Queller, and medallion bears).
-A great finisher when Grapeshot is not around.
-And lastly, bringing Lightning Bolt into the main opens up spaces for your side board.

Dismember
The idea is to help Grapeshot, Lightning Bolt and Echoing Truth in getting rid of those storm nuisance creatures: white eidolon, Thought-Knot Seer, and the like. I did not even had the chance to bring Dismember into the main deck during my stay at the Block 101. But that does not mean I will replace it with something else.

Back to 16 lands
I know it is a little risky. Going down to sixteen lands means I need to lower my spell curve. The downside of going 16 lands is you are prone to one land opening hand.

My next stop was at the newly opened Concealed Courtyard Hobby Shop (Maceda corner Calamba streets, Manila). I really like the venue because of how spacious it is; the room temperature is not that humid, and the venue is well lighted. I highly recommend Concealed Courtyard for those MTG players who are looking for a new place to play or just simply meeting new people. Also, their milk tea is a must try.

12 November 2017
Concealed Courtyard
Maceda St., Manila

Concealed Courtyard is hosting FQ trails. I went to the event and brought the same seventy-five I had from The Block 101's event.

Boros Burn 2-1
UR Combo 2-0
BG Elves 0-2
Mono Green Aggro 2-0
Grix Death's Shadow id
(3-1-1)   (6-3-1)

My errors
I had Four. First versus BG elves. I was so focus on trying to figure out a way on how to board wipe his entire elven community that I unintentionally dropped a second land for that turn. Realizing my mistake, I simply picked up my cards and off to game two. JEE-ZUES. I felt like a complete noob at that very moment. My second error was still versus BG elves during game two. It was my second turn. I untapped for the turn. I checked his board state, him: Forest and one Elvish Mystic. I have a Lightning Bolt at hand. I need at least a fetch land in order for me to kill that dork. I paused for a second thinking (i) if I will cast Opt in my upkeep in order for me to dig a little deeper for a fetch land/ UR land; or (ii) simply draw that top card and Opt in my main phase and pray to god Keranos to hand me the land I am praying. I elected the latter. So I drew for the turn, an Island. I dropped the well experienced newly drawn Beta Island on the table, then Opt into Scalding Tarn. DAMN! I should have waited for my Opt to resolve before doing a land drop. I ship back the turn. He then called elf after elf after elf cards. I died to this Tendrils of Agony like  BG elf card (except without the life gain part).

And the third one was on game two against a Mono Green Aggro deck. I drew for the turn, Pyromancer Ascension. Great! I dropped my third land into Thought Scour. Then grabbed my dice from my pocket onto the table. And when I was about to place a counter on my red enchantment, geez it's not there. I checked my hand and it is still there sitting like a boss. I checked the lands to confirm to myself if I somehow casted it first but only saw a tapped Island (which was intended for Thought Scour). And lastly, I hesitated (again) and this time its against a Mono White Enchantment deck.

I ended Concealed Courtyard's event with a loss to that enchantment deck.

My last tune up tournament was at Madcap Gaming.

14 November 2017
Madcap Gaming
San Pedro, Laguna

Before heading to the shop, I asked some storm troopers online for their option about Pieces of the Puzzle. Most of them suggested that I should try it because of how good it is versus discard base decks. Alright then, I'll give Pieces of the Puzzle (replacing those white enchantments) a try.

4c aggro 2-0
URw control 2-0
Affinity 2-1
Bant Eldrazi 2-1
(4-0)  (8-2)

4c Aggro
Game one: I board wipe his dorks to slow whatever he was up to. I won this with the help of an online ascension.
Game two: Killing his dorks plus Blood Moon shuts down his land resources. With him under control, I sculpt my hand into perfection before storming for the win.

URw Control
Usually he uses a deck that has the colors blue, white and fro time to time with a splash of a third color: red. So I put him on either UW control or Jeskai tempo/ control.

Both players decided to keep their opening seven. He went first by bringing down Scalding Tarn on the table. I try to read his body language looking for any sign that will tell me that he kept a hand with counter spells and/ or Baral removal spells. I sense he has both. I simply lay a Spirebluff Canal into a cantrip then pass. He dropped an Island into a cantrip before shipping the turn back without cracking his blue red fetchland. This is an indication that he has a very strong defensive hand. I started to think of those one to cast cards that can interact with me: Lightning Bolt, Path to Exile, Spell Pierce, and Spell Snare.

I draw for the turn, dropped my second land (island) into Pyromancer Ascension and asked him if he will allow it to resolve. Without having any second thought,  he cracked his Zendikar land - bolting himself with his own Steam Vents into Spell Snare. That's nice. I am pretty sure he will be on this position throughout the game. I assess my hand: a Grapeshot, 2 Manamorphose, 1 Pyretic Ritual, and 2 Desperate Rituals. I simply pass the turn after that brief interaction. He just dropped a Plains and pass the turn without spending that much time. Again, a sign that he is holding another defensive spell.

I draw for the turn, Flooded Strand. Dropped it and pass. He dropped a fetch (bolting himself again) into a Hallowed Fountain into a cantrip before passing the turn with an untapped Island, Plains, and Steam Vents. Spell Queller base something deck comes into mind. I checked our life points: him 14 me still at 20. I cracked my KTK fetch into a tapped Steam Vents at the end of his turn. I untapped. Draw (my second Grapeshot). Now I have: 3 lands on my table plus cards at hand: 2 Grapeshots, 3 rituals, and 2 Manamorphoses. I mentally double check the favorable would be situation in a terse. I begin my assault by tapping two lands into a Pyretic Ritual; and asked him if it's good. He thinks for a second before giving a thumbs up. The next spell was a Manamorphose. Not wasting any time, Spell Queller goes onto the table and is ready to eat it. Perfect! Now he's tapped out. Morphose and queller on the stack, I responded with the two remaining rituals followed by the second Manamorphose (4R 6s). I let his 2/3 flash creature resolve before firing my last two sorcery cards.

The first Grapeshot dealt seven; and the second one for eight. I won our game two because Blood Moon shuts his resources down; plus, Defense Grid kept his Negate and friends at bay.

Affinity
I lost game one due to Arcbound Raveger's ability to pass modular counters to its teammates. Shattering Spree is a house. Games two and three: A second turn ritual/s into spree destroying his robots and friends really put affinity's momentum into an almost complete halt.

Bant Eldrazi
I lost game one because of a third turn TKS. Another contributory factor was due to not getting the proper card combination for me to combo off. Game two: a third turn 18 goblin tokens were to much for his team to handle. Game three: he keeps a one land hand.  I sculpt my hand into perfection before aiming for the win.

Finally! I'm back into the winning column after spending weeks at the bottom of the sea! It feels great losing only three games out of sixteen games played. I hope the deck will perform to my expectation in the upcoming RPTQ which will be at Regran on 19 November 2017. Before I end this, if you are new to UR Storm and is looking for an updated primer, I strongly recommend Emma Handy's SCG articles dated 8/17/17 and 9/11/17. Her articles contained a lot of valuable insight which is perfect for those who wishes to get their feet wet. And if you are still looking for more UR Storm reading materials, here are CWS MTG's updated articles.

Thank you for reading.

OCTOBER 2017: UR STORM

After a disappointing 9-14 (39.1%) start, I decided to abandon my seventy-five for awhile and planned to sleeve its unstorm sibling. Unfortunately, I was not able to do it because of other important tasks in life. So I went to participate at Madcap's modern league with the same GP Kobe line up.

BG Death Shadow 0-2
Mono U Tron 2-1
BW Eldrazi Taxes 1-2
UR Storm 0-2

The worsening continues, my third straight 1-3 result - jeez! Here are the flashbacks that I can still recall.

BG Death Shadow
Game 1: A mulligan to five plus two disruptions caused my engine not to ignite.
Game 2: I was not expecting an opening Leyline of the Void from him. So without Echoing Truths during game two, I surrendered round one of this league.

Mono U Tron
I won games one and three. But the highlight of this game: I died to my own Grapeshot. How? He was able to resolve an Emrakul, The Promise End.

BW Eldrazi Taxes
Game three: He dropped Rule of Law and I forgot to bring those god-damn Echoing Truths again. Loss.

UR Storm
Pyromencer Ascension went online in both games but drew bricks from my next cantrip spells. If my memory serves me correct, my lifetime standing versus the UR gifts sibling, 1-5 (4-11 27%). I better need to do something with this.

I am very unhappy with that third straight 1-3 record. Two days after Madcap’s, I finally get to sleeve my unstorm deck. Here is my updated list (days before Ixalan gets legal for modern).

Unstorm
22 September 2017

Lands (18)
4 Scalding Tarn / 2 Flooded Strands / 2 Misty Rainforest / 3 Steam Vents / 4 Island / 3 Sulfur Falls

Spells (42)
4 Pyromancer Ascension / 4 Thing in the Ice  / 4 Lightning Bolt / 4 Lightning Helix / 4 Remand / 2 Cryptic Command / 1 Wipe Away / 3 Noxious Revival / 4 Serum Visions / 4 Sleight of Hand / 4 Think Twice / 4 Manamorphose

A week of gauntlet playtests, the unstorm did not perform the way I expected it to be. So I went back to my build and decided to implement some adjustments. In order for me to include a set of Opt and an Increasing Vengeance I took out the following: -1 Grapeshot, -1 Peer Through Depths, -1 Gifts Ungiven, -1 Faithless Looting and a land.

Going back, I need to understand why I had those losses from my three tournaments.

Revolt Zoo 1-2 L
Mono White DnT 0-2 L
bye
Living End 2-1 W
GW DnT 1-2 L
BW Eldrazi 2-1 W
BG Elves 1-2 L
Dredge 1-2 L
Tron 1-2 L
BG Death Shadow 0-2 L
Mono U Tron 2-1 W
BW Eldrazi Taxes 1-2 L
UR Storm 0-2 L
Total: 3-9 (25%) / 12 - 21 (36.3%)

Causes
Wrong Decisions: (i) Calling a bunch of goblin tokens usually spells win; but there are times that you’ll need to use them defensively in order for you to buy time. (ii) If there is a chance to board wipe his battalion, do it. (iii) Selecting between cards: Cantrip > land, except if you are looking for your second land. Ritual < cantrip, except if you are going off within or on your next turn. Land > ritual, except if you are going off within or on your next turn. Win condition > whatever card you see (cantrip / ritual) because statistic wise the probability of drawing a cantrip / ritual / land is far better than drawing any of your win condition (Past in Flames, Grapeshot and Pyromancer Ascension).  (iv) Correct sequencing of spells.

RTFC: Before allowing to resolve a spell or an ability, it is very important to read the (McGregor tone) fookin card. You must also think of the possible effects it will create like triggers of this and that card/s whether it is in play, graveyard, hand, or exile zone. In this way you will be able to maximize the value of your spells. Remember that stack matters to a storm player especially when in the middle of going off.

Side boarding: (i) While there are players who use net decks, there are those who loves to explore alternative side board card options which is why, probably, I have instances that I, well, 'forgot' to bring in those Echoing Truths. (ii) I admit, UR Storm Baral Gifts became so popular and as a result it's not just the hates towards the deck increases but also people are getting more aware of it. (iii) Enough with the experimentation of whether or not this or that card will work versus this archetype. I'll stick with my side boarding guide from now on.

I finally get to test my list at the Block 101's modern Thursday paired with this fifteen: 3 Leyline of Sanctity, 3 Empty the Warrens, 2 Blood Moon, 2 Echoing Truth, 2 Shatterstorm, and 3 Lightning Bolt. I was hoping to face, if not all, any of the following decks: Eldrazi variant, GW Counters, any Death Shadow base decks, Affinity and Burn. I faced: Vengevine-Hallowed One, GW Counters, Dredge, and Elves.

Vengevine-Hallowed one
I lost both games. Going fetch into shockland more than twice was the mistake I had. He won both games with this path: Burning Tree Emissary into Reckless Buishwhacker, RB's trigger on the stack, trigger Vengevine/s, resurrect that green 4/4 leafy creature/s, then RB's trigger resolves. Swing everybody for the win.

GW Counters
My lone win from the event. I lost game one because of a bad decision. It was my fourth (or fifth turn) when I had the chance to dismantle his army; but instead of doing it, I opted to dig for combo pieces. I paid the price when I shipped the turn. Calling for Vizier into unlimited green mana into Collected Company hitting Duskwatch into finding his win-condition and swing for the win. Realizing and remembering my mistakes from this archetype, I did my best to win the next two games. I won games two and three by killing (game two with a bolt while ascension was online) / returning (game three returned it back to his at the end of his turn) his white Eidolon.
Dredge
Shit happens. Lost both games. I drew bricks plus he had a black leyline out and no truths with me to bounce that nuisance.

Elves
I mulled to 5 cards in both games. Also, I never get to draw enough cantrips to power my storm engine. Because of these mulligans, I already felt that right from the start that I will not win this. So I simply sit back, relax and watched him play his game. He puked elves after elves until he had enough mana to call Emrakul, Thorn of Aeon into an extra turn. GG.

Another 1-3 to be added to my worsening record: 4-12 (14-28 = 33.3%). I am frustrated with that consecutive 1-3 record but part of me is a little happy because I won against one of the decks that I am expecting to see at the fast coming modern RPTQ. There were a lot of modern tournaments in the immediate weekend but I opted to sit out because of personal errands.

On October 14 Manila saw two big modern tournaments, The Vault's and Gatecrashers'. I went to The Vault's FM modern (with the same 75) because it is nearer to where I live. The event registered 50+ players, 6 rounds with a cut to top 8.

Grix DS 1-2
Grix control 2-0
UW control 2-1
Naya Burn 1-2
Eldrazi Tron 1-2
Boros 2-0
3-3 (9-7)

Here's my brief report.

Grix DS
Game three I am on the draw and is fully aware that this archetype packs a lot of disrupt spells versus storm. My opening seven was: a medallion bear, 2 rituals, 2 lands, and 2 cantrips. I tanked for 30 seconds whether or not I will keep or will mull for that white leyline. I picked the former option and regret keeping it after two or three turns of him raping my hand with Thoughtseizes and Inquisions.

Grix control
I learned my mistake from my round one. I mulled for Leyline Sanctity and turns out to be a good gamble because he kept a hand with 2 or 3 disrupt spells.

UW Control
Game three, at one point he brings down Gideon Jura resulting into tapping out all of his lands. I go off when I got my turn back.

Naya burn
Game three, opening seven was: Leyline of Santity, Pyromancer Ascension, Canal, a ritual and the rest cantips. Second land did not came on time. Goblin Guide and Monastery Swiftspear teamed up to hand me my second loss of the day. Mathematically speaking, this puts me out into top 8 contention.

Eldrazi Tron
Note for myself: always use the proper term when using the judge call button. This game really gave us both a very good mental exercise with regards on how the stack works.

Boros
Game one: All I need was one life point to win the game. Keranos granted my wish. He was short of one lethal damage off his bolt spells.
Game two: I win the round in turn two.

After playing 22 rounds [7-15 (31.8%) or 23-35 ( 39.7%)], despite that not so impressive stats, I am still optimistic that it will bounce back to its winning glory just in time for the modern RPTQ. This is all for now, thank you for reading! ^_^
