Sea Championship Philippine Invitational Trials
Modern
Power-Play
Tanauan, Batangas
20 July 2024

RD 1 RG Prowess loss
RD 2 Revolt Zoo loss
RD 3 Boros Burn win

GR Prowess
Their one-drop casting costs cheap instants and sorcery were too fast for my school to handle.

Revolt Zoo
Fast go-wide strategy is not a favorable match-up vs the school.

Boros Burn
Harbinger of the Seas turned all his lands into Islands. No Mountains. No Lightning Bolts. No killing of my school. Win.

MODERN: MERFOLK

Sea Championship Philippine Invitational Trials
Modern
MDP, Bicutan
13 July 2024

RD 1 UB Frog (win)
RD 2 Boros Energy (win)
RD 3 Living End (win)
RD 4 5c Zoo Domain ID
Semis RG Prowess (loss)

Here are some of the things that I can still remember.

Aether Vial activation. Next time I'll be stricter in my next outing.

Harbinger of Seas helped me win two rounds, against Boros Energy and Living End.

Sink in Stupor showed me how great he was. Pitched to Force of Negation/Subtlety; turn one pay three life points into land into an Aether Vial; and returned a crucial spell.

This is all for now. Thank you for reading.

MODERN: UNSTORM

HobbyCon
Festival Mall, Alabang
06 July 2024

Rd 1 RG Prowess win
Rd 2 Tron loss
Rd 3 Ruby Storm loss
Rd 4 Mono Blue Belcher loss

I did some minor changes from last week's 75. Things like I added Archmage's Charm. Took out Pyromancer Ascension and replaced it with Roiling Vortex. I lessen my one-casting cost cantrips and added removals and Timely Reinforcements.

I think I have to dedicate sideboard cards for Tron.

Priceless moment: when opponents are being caught off-guarded with Felidar-Saheeli combo.

The duo of Roiling Vortex and Aria of Flame is promising.

Well, this is all for now.

Thank you for reading!

MODERN: UNSTORM

Asia Modern Showdown
hosted by OHS
Vito Cruz, Manila
26 June 2024

Win: Rakdos Scam and Tron
Loss: Tron, Boros Cat,  Mono Black Necro, and Urza

Here are some of the things that I can still remember, six days after the event.

At six mana, I can go off. Cast Felidar blink a basic land then summon Saheeli Rai into loop. I missed this line of play multiple times.

Having an online Pyromancer Ascension is good. But overall, I find it slow in today's meta. I'll probably make some adjustments for my next outing.

Well, this is all for now.

PIONEER: MONO RED GOBLINS

PIONEER RCQ at SM MOA
hosted by Mana Underground
15 June 2024
Pasay City
Rd 1 Boros Prowess win
Rd 2 UR Phoenix loss
Rd 3 UR Phoenix loss
Rd 4 Amalia Combo loss
Then I drop off from the roll.

I felt so mismatched versus UR Phoenix. Ledger Shredder is a house versus my team. How I miss Leyline of Combustion because most of their removals were spot.

Versus Amalia, I was careless for not protecting my dinosaur during game two.

This is all for now. I'll do better in my next outing.

Thank you for reading.

LEGACY: BURN

I entered Canada’s MTG scene with a legacy burn deck, might as well end with it. So I decided to join Face to Face Toronto's Legacy FNM. I had to make some adjustments to the deck's 75 because the team is not powered anymore by Conrad.

Here's the 75.

FNM @ Face to Face Games
Danforth Avenue, Toronto
24 May 2024

Burn
Main Deck
7 Mountains
4 Arid Mesa
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Wooded Foothills

4 Goblin Guide
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel

4 Lighting Bolt
4 Chain of Lightning
4 Lava Spike
3 Rift Bolt
4 Skewer the Critics
4 Fireblast
4 Price of Progress
2 Pyrostatic Pillar

Sideboard
2 Sulfuric Vortex
2 Tormod's Crypt
4 Leyline of Sanctity
3 Searing Blood
4 Roiling Vortex

I faced the following
RD 1 Goblins 2-1
RD 2 Mono Black 2-0
RD 3 UB Reanimator 1-2
RD 4 GW Maverick 2-0

Here are some of the things that I can still recall.

vs Goblins
I beat both Chalice of the Void (for one) and a Trinisphere. I had a situation wherein the opponent Furried my mini red army. I should have fired my Searing Blood at it in response to Furry’s evoke trigger. Then let it die him receiving three point of damage from Searing Blood's late effect.

Price of Progress was the MVP in many games.

Mono Black did not expect Leyline of Sanctity from a mono-red deck. A lot of dead cards were in his opening seven.

vs UB Reanimator
Force of Will denied my turn one Swiftspear.

In my last upkeep, our life point total respectively were (mine) 2 and (him) 3. I know he has a Daze, a Force of Will, and two more blue cards in his hand. And on his table were three tapped lands and an open Underground Sea. While on my table I had a Roiling Vortex and six mountains.

We both know that he cannot use his counterspells’ alternate casting cost at that point due to Roiling Vortex’ presence. All I needed was to top deck any bolt spell. I drew Tormod’s Crypt. GG.

Thank you 416 for these good and fun core memories! Until we meet again! 💓

This is all for now folks! Thank you for reading.

MODERN: RWg SONOGEN

F2F Tour Toronto
Modern Super Qualifier

20 April 2024
Montecassino Hotel
North York, Ontario

RWg SONOGEN
Paeng_Paeng

Main deck
4 Arid Mesa
4 Wooded Foothills
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Sunbaked Canyon
2 Mountain
1 Stomping Ground
4 Goblin Guide
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Skullcrack
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Rift Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Skewer the Critics
4 Boros Charm
4 Searing Blaze
4 Roiling Vortex
1 Lightning Helix

Sideboard
3 Path to Exile
4 Destructive Revelry
3 Sanctifier en-Vec
3 Tormod's Crpt
2 Deflecting Palm

This is basically just a Boros Burn deck except those four red-green cards in the sideboard, Destructive Revelry. In case you are wondering 'why not just use Wear/Tear?'; well, because of two reasons.

First, (i) I wanted a card that can destroy an artifact and/or an enchantment but, at the same time, deals damage to its controller. Which Destructive Revelry can do, unlike the other two sideboard staples, Smash to Smithereens and Wear/Tear.

And second, (ii) I left my Wear/Tears at home. I only have these with me. ^_^

I won my first round (vs BG Yawgmoth). Path to Exiles and Searing Blazes were my MVPs.

Then lost my next four games (Baral Gifts Storm, BG Yawgmoth, 5c Domain Zoo, and Amulet Titan) due to one reason: lands. Yes, lands. Either  I was not drawing lands or drawing too much lands.

Then won my sixth-round match (BG Yawgmth, again) before dropping.

I really cannot do anything about that. I guess I will have to play better on my next (probably my last) outing.

Anyway, you guys take good care. Thanks for reading.
